Criminal Law Overview
Geoff Heim - Colorado Springs Criminal and DUI Defense Attorney Practice Specialties
So what's the trouble? What are your legal woes?
There are many different types of cases and areas of practice with which a Colorado Springs Defense Attorney can assist, and I've had years of experience in all of them. A client of mine once told me that it seemed like my primary job as a Colorado Springs defense attorney was to separate him from the other bazillion defendants in court--to provide the human element of his life to help him to stand out when appearing before those in power. And he was right. My job is to make the 'system' look upon my client as a real live human being instead of 'just another case file'.
No matter what you've done, or are accused of doing, you have a Constitutional right to be represented and treated fairly. And that's why I'm here.
Here's a list of some of the different areas of practice I've specialized in. On each area, feel free to click on the 'heading', and you can learn more about that specific specialty:
Driving Under the Influence (DUI) or Driving While Ability Impaired (DWAI)
DUI charges, along with Misdemeanor criminal charges, compose the majority of the cases I work on. DUI's and DWAI's aren't strictly the realm of college kids and those with substance abuse issues. Far from it. Any upstanding citizen can make this mistake at some point in their lives, and the consequences in court, with the DMV, and to your pocket-book can be quite severe. But there are definitely defense tactics that get results. To start with, we'll comb over every detail or the case to discover problems in police procedures, chemical testing errors, and administrative snafus. The defense builds from there.
Driving Under Suspension
Also known as "Driving Under Revocation", these cases have taken on a life of their own here in Colorado Springs, and the consequences can be more severe than even DUI cases if you're left fending for yourself before the judge.
Misdemeanor Charges
Along with DUI cases, Misdemeanor Criminal Defense accounts for roughly 60% of my overall caseload. These can be cases like harassment, third degree assault, criminal mischief, telephone obstruction, assault and battery, domestic violence, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, or theft. Consequences to vulnerable defendants can be dramatic and unbalanced, especially in any charges deemed as 'domestic violence'.
Felony Charges
Behind Misdemeanors and DUI's, Felony defense is the next most common representation I do. I've defended clients for felonies ranging as serious as 1st Degree Murder, all the way down to giving false information to a pawn broker. On both sides of the table, I've been involved in many high-profile Felony cases. Other examples of Felony Defense involve firearm/weapons charges, drug trafficking, and the manufacturing of meth or other controlled substances.
Domestic Violence
Even though my Domestic Violence cases almost always end in favor of my clients, the process can be a wild ride, bewildering and frustrating. Throughout my experience with 'DV', I've developed an acute sensitivity for sensitive family situations, and discretion for meeting my clients' needs regarding domestic violence and allegations of child abuse.
Juvenile Crimes
When it comes to kids and the criminal legal system, I've always believed in a very aggressive defense. Strong representation is the first step to getting juveniles out of the "system" and returning the power and decision making back to the rightful place in the juvenile's life--his family
Municipal Court
Each city has its own set of rules and regulations defense attorneys must abide by. With my previous experience, along with working closely with former Municipal prosecutors and judges, cases prosecuted by the city will be well-defended by my representation.
Traffic Violations
A speeding ticket is more than just a nuisance or embarrassment. Without good help from an attorney, you'll accumulate points on your license, suffer increased insurance rates, and waste lots of time and money dealing with Traffic court.
If you didn't see your particular type of case above, feel free to give me a call and we'll talk about it. A chat and an initial consultation is always totally free, and you'll be sure to leave my office knowing a lot more about your situation. If, for some reason, your case lies outside of my expertise and I can't help you, I'll refer you to one or more attorneys who can.
