Colorado Drug Trafficking Schedule Laws

In the state of Colorado, drugs are broken down into five classifications. These five schedules all carry various penalties and consequences, with the first schedule carrying the most severe.

The schedules include the following types of drugs:

  • Schedule I: Heroin, LSD, marijuana, and ecstasy.
  • Schedule II: Cocaine, opium, morphine, and methadone.
  • Schedule III: Codeine, testosterone, anabolic steroids, and hydrocodone.
  • Schedule IV: Tranquilizers, sedatives, and clonazepam.
  • Schedule V: Over-the-counter drugs with small amounts of codeine.

If you are found trafficking a minor Schedule V drug, you can face between 6 and 18 months in jail and up to $5,000 in fines. Comparatively, being found with Schedule I drugs can result in 4 to 12 years behind bars and up to $750,000 in fines in some cases. Even though the state of Colorado has legalized recreational marijuana, there are still limitations. You could be facing charges if you grow more than six plants at home, drive with the drug in your system, or possess more than one ounce without the proper permissions.
